High-Performance Hot Water Tank Replacement for Ovation
Client:
Ovation
Location:
Feilding, New Zealand
Industry:
Meat Processing
Project Scope:
Design, fabrication, and installation of a 10,000L hot water storage tank
Project Overview:
Ovation, a leading meat processing company based in Feilding, approached DTS to address a critical issue with their existing 10,000L hot water tank. The tank, operating at 85°C, had begun to exhibit signs of corrosion—posing both operational and safety concerns.
The Challenge:
To deliver a durable, energy-efficient, and corrosion-resistant solution that would meet Ovation’s operational demands while withstanding the harsh conditions inherent to hot water storage systems.

Project Challenges
Corrosion in High-Temperature Water Systems
Hot water systems above 55°C typically have chloride content that can cause corrosion. Standard stainless steels like 304 and even 316 can degrade prematurely when exposed to such conditions at high temperatures.
Thermal Efficiency
The client also requested a solution that would minimise heat loss during storage and improve energy efficiency on site. This required careful engineering to optimize insulation and cladding systems for performance and durability.
Structural and Seismic Compliance
The new tank would need to be installed on a new foundation. DTS collaborated closely with Ovation’s civil engineering team to ensure the concrete pad was designed to spec and that the final solution exceeded New Zealand’s stringent seismic standards.
Engineering SolutionS
DTS delivered a comprehensive engineering and fabrication package that addressed all of Ovation’s concerns:
- Material Selection: The tank was fabricated from 2205 Duplex stainless steel, a premium material with significantly higher resistance to chloride-induced corrosion compared to 304 and 316 grades. This ensures long-term durability under high-temperature conditions.
- Thermal Engineering: DTS performed thermal efficiency and heat loss calculations, designing a high-performance insulation and cladding system that significantly reduces heat loss and contributes to long-term energy savings.
- Seismic Compliance: The tank was engineered to meet and exceed New Zealand seismic design codes, ensuring resilience and operational safety in a high-seismic zone. DTS worked hand-in-hand with Ovation’s civil engineers on the foundation design to ensure a seamless fit and installation.
Conclusion
This project demonstrates DTS’s expertise in delivering fit-for-purpose engineered tank solutions that solve complex industrial challenges. Through material science, thermal engineering, and collaborative project delivery, DTS provided Ovation with a future-proof hot water system built to perform in demanding conditions—safely, efficiently, and reliably.
