Proper disposal matters.

Learn more about our refrigerant swap

We’re often asked what happens to the R404A we remove during our refrigerant swap programme.

Unlike other refrigerant bounty schemes, we don’t reuse it - we ensure it’s permanently destroyed.

As New Zealand’s premier provider of stainless steel food-grade vats and advanced refrigeration systems, responsible refrigerant handling is central to our values.

We remove R404A from the cold chain. Permanently.

We don’t merely replace refrigerants; we ensure that retired R404A is responsibly destroyed off‑shore:

  • We consolidate all collected R404A.

  • Then we send it to a certified third-party.

  • The R404A is then transported to a certified United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) approved destruction facility.

  • In high‑temperature reactors, chemical bonds are broken and the refrigerant is transformed into reusable industrial compounds, such as mineral fluorides.

Why does this matter?

Approximately 90% of refrigerant leaks into the atmosphere by equipment end-of-life.

By intercepting and destroying the R404A in our refrigerant swap, DTS ensures it never contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

Better for the planet and better for your pocket.

With R404A use decreasing and levies increasing, systems that use R404A are expensive to run and maintain.

Our jug‑for‑jug swap to R449A adds affordability and environmental benefit, without equipment upgrades or hidden fees
